Previous News from 2007

4th January 2008

Hello and a very happy new year.

2007 was a vintage year for The Proclaimers with the September release of their latest album 'Life With You' (W14/Universal) enjoying both critical acclaim and commercial success in the UK with sales exceeding Silver status. The Proclaimers then played their biggest ever UK/Ireland tour, performing to over 85,000 people at 45 dates. Earlier in 2007 Craig and Charlie teamed up with Peter Kay and Matt Lucas, as a new version of I'm Gonna be (500 Miles) spent three weeks at number one, raising over a million pounds for Comic Relief.

We will be announcing shortly April/May USA & Canada tour dates, meantime dates below are now confirmed in Europe for March, more gigs to be added.

gThe album is certainly getting immense and deserved
critical acclaim. Here is an example from this months
MOJO. (Click to view larger <<< )

Craig and Charlie give their track by track notes:

Life With You is basically an old-fashioned Proclaimers love song. It’s simply talking about wanting to live your life with somebody, and it’s been transformed by Steve Evan’s arrangement.

This is about our overwhelming contempt for people on the left in this country who snipe against the royal family and then end up taking honours.

For people who believe in the monarchy (we’re don’t, we’re republicans) then that’s fair enough, we don’t have a problem with that. But we feel total contempt for people who are declare that they’re against the monarchy but then think it’s ok to take an honour in later life.

This is really a story about our contempt for people’s obsessive behaviour on subjects like football, Starwars, or any kind of modern obsession which turns a pastime into an obsession and elevates it to a state of a religion

S-O-R-R-Y is another one about the international situation. It’s really a song about the people – I’m talking mostly about the newspaper columnists - who were the cheerleaders for the war and the invasion of Iraq. Many people who write for newspapers have never been involved in any military action, and never will be, but seem to think that its alright to encourage us to send our daughters and sons into wars. And when it goes pear-shaped, like it has, they’re not even prepared to admit that they were wrong.

This is about people who find it difficult to understand why a certain amount of misfortune falls on them consistently. Hence they always seek to blame someone else for what’s going wrong in their life. The song is basically saying, “wake up there’s nobody else left blame, and a lot of the pain and the hurt that you feel is of your own making.”

This is a song about the blatant misogyny that has become glorified much more than ever before in music over the last ten or fifteen years. The song is about the negativity of hyping up gangsters to be role models. I don’t mind songs about any subject, but it seems that there’s a lot of them in the last few years, and sometimes it get monotonous to hear a constant steam of hymns to violence and blatant misogyny.

It seems that you can be as misogynistic as you want and any number of record companies will put your records out and nobody bats an eyelid.

This is a lust song, about seeing a lady and just wanting to have some kind of relationship with her – not one that’s going to last – but something that might just last a few nights.

If you are creative you should use all the aspects of your life in your work, and you shouldn’t just use the optimistic side, you should use the heartbreak and hurt that everybody feels at certain periods of time. This is a song about harnessing that pain, and the fact that you should balance the optimistic stuff and not be afraid to be truthful.

This is a song about the avoidable disaster which has befallen America over the last few years over their involvement in Iraq. We’ve got people like John Reid saying that we could be fighting this so-called war on terrorism for 50 years, and we’ve got the Neocons in America talking about it like it’s some kind of crusade. It’s a very depressing thought that this crusade could be going on for decades more.

This is a story from the point of view of a woman who’s been involved in a relationship that’s completely consumed her life, it’s consumed everything she’s thought about and she’s been wiling to sacrifice anything for that relationship. The arrangement is somewhat country, somewhat RnB, which sits well with the songs.

It’s a Wreckless Eric song - I wish it was ours. It’s one of the records that you remember a lot from ’76 to ’78 period when New Wave  reignited people’s passion in popular music.

We do the song live and it works. One of the great things is that Wreckless Eric himself has admitted that he’s found out that the Bahamas is not in the Caribbean!

This is a very simple song about not being too bothered about doing too much with your day. It’s really a song about not letting your day being dictated by worrying about time. It’s got a lazy arrangement as well, something that’s a wee bit reminiscent of Buddy Holly records, in terms of the feel of the song.

I think this is self-explanatory song. It’s about wondering that if there’s a God, why is there is so much hurt and pain?

Peter Kay, Matt Lucas and The Proclaimers are ‘Gonna Be’ downloadable for Comic Relief!

Following the massive anticipation surrounding Peter Kay’s new Comic Relief project, he’s produced and directed an exclusive performance '(I'm Gonna Be) 500 Miles' by The Proclaimers, featuring Brian Potter and Andy Pipkin. The track will be made available for digital download (video and audio & ringtone immediately after it airs tonight on Comic Relief – The Big One.

The single, in aid of Comic Relief, will also be available on ECD single and DVD single from Monday 19th March on EMI.

In a never to be repeated collaboration, Phoenix Night’s Brian Potter and Little Britain’s Andy Pipkin actually add their vocal talents to those of cult Scot band The Proclaimers to deliver a hilarious and rousing version of the 80’s anthem.

In typical comic fashion, the hilarious sketch, aired tonight on BBC ONE won’t see Brian and Andy walking their 500 miles, they roll!

Peter Kay said: It’ll lift people up and hopefully do a lot of good in the process. It was great of The Proclaimers and Matt to help bring the idea to life”

Matt Lucas, who is a lifelong Proclaimers fan said:
“The Proclaimers are my absolute favourite band of all time. It was a great honour to be allowed to destroy one of their greatest songs.”

The Proclaimers said of their involvement:
"We are very honoured to be asked to participate in this years Red
Nose Day and the use of one of our songs for a cause as worthy as this makes us very happy."

The huge success of Peter Kay’s last Comic Relief single, ‘(Is this the way to) Amarillo’ for Red Nose Day 2005, spurred on his decision to create this new project and release this song, the hope is that it will raise even more money this time round!

To download this hilarious sketch to your PC or phone (video and audio) visit,,, or your mobile operator’s portal. All downloads will help raise extra cash for Red Nose Day 2007.

January 2007

A Very Happy New Year.

We are looking forward to a particularly exciting year ahead and in forthcoming months, will be announcing news on a new Proclaimers album and tour dates.
Craig and Charlie are finishing off a batch of new songs which they will record in the Spring along with the band, Ross, Stevie, Garry John and Zac.

There will be a few select live appearances over the summer. The new album will be released in the Autumn and a UK & Ireland tour follows in October and November. We would then hope to see The Proclaimers live in Australasia, USA & Canada early in 2008.

We'll announce details as and when confirmed.

Also, there's the Musical!
Here's the info info from Dundee Rep's press release.

Dundee Rep Ensemble presents
Featuring the songs of THE PROCLAIMERS
Written by Stephen Greenhorn

Dundee Rep Theatre (18 April – 12 May)
then on tour to
The Festival Theatre, Edinburgh (15 – 26 May)
His Majesty’s Theatre, Aberdeen (29 May – 2 June)
Kings’s Theatre, Glasgow (5 – 9 June)

Dundee Rep Theatre’s plans to premiere a new Scottish musical based around the songs of The Proclaimers are now confirmed. SUNSHINE ON LEITH has been written by Stephen Greenhorn and will be performed by members of Dundee Rep’s Ensemble under the direction of James Brining. The musical, SUNSHINE ON LEITH also boasts a live nine piece band and will open in Dundee in April 2007 and will then tour to Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Glasgow. Rumours of the show have already received a great deal of attention from both the public and the press. Tickets are already on sale in Dundee and Glasgow with tickets due to go on sale in Aberdeen on Feb 6 and in Edinburgh on Jan 15 2007.

SUNSHINE ON LEITH focuses on two Scottish men who leave the army and return home to Leith and their families. Three very different love stories are intertwined creating a funny, poignant and hugely entertaining show. SUNSHINE ON LEITH will have a cast of 15 performers including the award-winning Dundee Rep Ensemble - Scotland’s only full-time company of actors. The band also help bring to life 21 much loved Proclaimers songs including Letter from America, I’m on My Way and I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles). SUNSHINE ON LEITH uses the music of The Proclaimers to tell this engrossing tale about everyday life in Scotland in a similar way to Mamma Mia’s use of Abba’s songs – it will not be about the Fife born twins.

The show coincides with the 20th anniversary of The Proclaimer’s first ever album – This is the Story. Dundee Rep Theatre is already well known for staging successful musical productions and already has hits like Gypsy, Flora the Red Menace and Cabaret. Stephen Greenhorn, who has just completed an episode of Dr Who, also wrote TV’s River City and Glasgow Kiss and the stage play Passing Places.

“The Proclaimers’ songs are rooted in Scottish experiences and seem to belong to the people of Scotland. We have to do them justice and put them in a context they deserve that engages the audience and gives them a great night out” comments James Brining.

Craig and Charlie say they are “surprised and very happy that a theatre company of the quality of Dundee Rep with its fantastic history, are doing a play featuring our music”.
