2003 saw The Proclaimers
recorded their fifth
studio album
in London during May with producer, Edwyn
Collins.
June saw The Proclaimers and band back on road with a Five
Isles Tour
to Bute, Skye, Lewis, Orkney and Shetland. July saw a triumphant main
stage appearance at T
In The Park,
the month also saw The Proclaimers perform to immense acclaim at Galway
Arts Festival,
The Stockton
International Riverside Festival,
Trowbridge
Music Festival
and Womad
Rivermead 2003.
Following the UK release of their fifth album ‘Born
Innocent’
in September, October saw The Proclaimers enjoying a 30
date sell out tour across UK and Ireland.
November, saw them touring Dubai,
Singapore and Australia,
including two major outdoor shows as part of the Rugby
World Cup 2003 at Sydney Darling Harbour
and Perth
Arena Joondalup
on the evenings of Englands victories over France and Australia.
December and The Proclaimers head back home for more sell out shows in
Scotland and going down an absolute storm to over 2000
The Coral fans at Liverpool’s Royal Court,
when performing an hour long set as surprise special guests at The
Corals
home town end of year show.
The old year ended and the new one began in memorable style, headlining
Glasgow’s
Hogmanay
celebrations in front of 15,000
hardy souls
at the city’s George Square, amidst 70mph gales and torrential rain.
As outdoor events across the land were cancelled, miraculously the rain
in Glasgow stopped for 80 minutes as The Proclaimers took to the stage
and soaked Glaswegians celebrated
gleefully.

Review
Rock and Pop CDs:
The Proclaimers - Born Innocent (Persevere)
By Graeme Virtue
MAYBE it’s the bracing, box-fresh production by Edwyn Collins. Or
maybe I’m just getting old. Whatever it is, the new album from The
Proclaimers sounds terrific, effortlessly combining all the attributes
that have made them Scotland’s best-loved band; it’s defiant,
vibrant, witty and catchy. And while there’s nothing here to quite
match stone-cold classics like Letter From America or I’m Gonna
Be (500 Miles), the cheerfully self-lacerating Hate My Love approaches
that skyscraping level. Perhaps the whimsical Dear Deirdre – addressed
to the famous agony aunt – is a bit throwaway, but the other 12
tracks (including a yodel-tastic cover of Five O’Clock World by
The Vogues) are brash and boisterous. Next month, we’ll hear new
albums from Texas and Travis. But they’ll struggle to match this
gem from Craig and Charlie.

Record of the Week
BORN INNOCENT *****
(Five Stars)
The Proclaimers
Persevere Persreccd09, £14.99
Three albums in as many years from the Reid twins? No, surely and emphatically
not shome mishtake, but the most composed and confident record the twins
have made in a 16-year career, one which sounds like it was influenced
by The Proclaimers and not their country, soul and gospel heroes.
Bookended by the strident title track and the sublime ‘There’s
No Doubt’ facing down the ageing process with a bristling honesty,
this is an unapologetic and admirable piece of work.
Recorded by Edwyn Collins in his hi-tech retro home studio, this is indeed
an old fashioned rock record with old fashioned rock values, enlivened
by the distinctive sound of their own touring band.
Stevie Christie’s keyboard squeezes extra heartbreak from the aching
‘Unguarded Moments’, the Reids amazingly yodel in harmony
on a speeded-up bluesy version of The Vogues’ ‘Five O’
Clock World’, while Stuart Nisbet’s guitar thrashes out the
punk rock protest that is ‘Blood On Your Hands’.
Then we have ‘Hate My Love’, a venomous kiss-off of a song
that Elvis Costello would be proud to have in his songbook, though even
he might have stopped short of the killer couplet, "You’re
worse than drink, You’re worse than crack, For you they should bring
hanging back". The fact they chose it as the first single is a statement
of intent, and you should ignore the older, wiser, angrier Reid brothers
at your peril. Colin Somerville
